Commercial Lines Underwriter
This job requires the candidate to evaluate, underwrite, and quote commercial insurance risks within the firm’s binding authorities and with a limited number of small business brokerage markets (non-binding authority). This position is mission-critical; as such, trustworthiness and dependability are of high importance.
Job Description
Main Job Responsibilities:
- Underwriting risks and suggesting rates and premiums based on coverage and specific underwriting guidelines.
- Performing demographic analysis for new and/or renewal business to properly distribute aggregates and spread of risk.
- Evaluating loss potential due to catastrophe, severity, or frequency of possible loss on individual accounts and the overall book.
- Ordering the necessary reports or documents that are critical to the underwriting process, such as credit, location, and/or inspection reports, as well as building cost estimates.
- Binding coverage and coordinating binders/evidence of such.
- Maintaining electronic files for submissions and written or lost business (including issuing cancellation on business already bound).
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Sound understanding of the products and services offered by the firm, as well as the benefits, constraints, and appropriate uses of each.
- Capable of assessing various risks or exposures of prospective business to determine the viability of the business and be able to appropriately price it.
- Sensitive to customer satisfaction and willing to respond to customers’ needs quickly to exceed their expectations.
- Adept at managing a heavy workload in a fast-paced environment and establishing priorities that assist other team members, support customers, and align with company goals.

- Reach new business production and renewal retention goals.
- Maintain a profitable of book of business.
- Meet DeCotis’s service standards.
- Develop and manage agency relationships.
Position Requirements
- At least three years of prior experience in underwriting or business development for a carrier, MGA, or wholesaler with profitable results is highly desired.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to self-manage a large workload while meeting specific service levels and response time standards.
- Experience working with “ALIS” management software a plus.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Bachelor’s degree and professional designations (CPCU, ARM, AU) are a plus.
Compensation & Benefits
The annual base salary offered will be commensurate with work experience and the degree to which the candidate meets the criteria above. In addition to base salary, underwriters are paid bonuses in accordance with the firm’s incentive plans.
